Claire Haddon
Falling somewhere between photography, film, sculpture and installation, my work is an exploration of things which are 'real', using as a metaphor the physicality of photography and film. Common themes revolve around time, layers, cycles and change - as seen through familiar or recognisable objects.
I am interested in finding new patterns, by exploring the world through a different set of filters, usually the framing and context of a camera. (Although often my photos are in series like film-stills and my films are static like photographs). The aim is to remove the consistency of my own human viewpoint and replace it with a new constant, usually responding to a pattern in the object itself. In this way, the work assumes an existence of its own. Inherent patterns and processes, within my work, are highlighted by simple subject matter. In these pieces an event or subject is not the focus but rather the presentation of an alternative way of experiencing everyday occurrences.
An important part of the process is to consider the 'stuff' itself. A photograph is not just an image, it's a physical thing. Recent projects have included embossing, bending, soaking and weathering photographs and they are always shown in ways or locations which relate to their content. The setting is an important part of the artwork, which adds another layer to its meaning.
